or Renew Your Current Membership
The HECA Membership Year runs from April 1 through March 31. To qualify for membership in HECA, you must adhere to our Requirements & Expectations as set forth below:
Membership Requirements:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally and nationally accredited, not-for-profit college or university.
- Demonstrate experience as an educational consultant by serving students as they explore higher education options, or provide proof of enrollment in an educational counseling program.
- Agree to abide by HECA’s Ethics and Standards statement and the NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
- Participate as a new member in HECA’s educational consultants’ pre-conference orientation within two years of joining or provide evidence of certification from an accredited college counseling program or certification as an educational planner.
- Attend HECA’s annual conference at least once every four years.
- Pursue ongoing professional development through attendance at conferences and workshops, and through visits to college and university campuses.
Membership Expectations:
- Network with HECA members at conferences and through the online HECA message forum.
- Mentor individuals new to the profession.
- Assist HECA by serving on committees, the board, or by helping with the annual conference.
- Contribute to the HECA newsletter.
- Join the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and/or your regional ACAC. Volunteer to serve on committees or the board, present sessions at conferences, and/or help at college fairs.
- Show respect for and work cooperatively with high school counselors, college admissions staff and other educational consultants.
- Demonstrate professionalism at all times and positively promote the public’s awareness of educational consulting.
